Grouper Game On

The grouper are wide open in the deep water.  We went this past Saturday 50 miles due East out of Mayport and the grouper were on fire, we had a black belly grouper that bottomed out at 55lbs!  Along with the grouper, we had 75 trigger fish that weighed up to 8lbs.  There have been a lot of people trying to hit the inshore numbers but it seems to be all snapper in close and you cannot keep them so it is worth it to just stick it out an go deep.  Good luck to all you anglers!

Cobia Bite

As we are quickly approaching the 90 degree days of summer and the water is heating up, the Cobia are moving into the beach.  I was 55 miles offshore of St Augustine about 2 weeks ago bottom fishing and I saw more Cobia swim up to the boat than I have ever seen in my life.  We were using live grunts to try and lure them in but they didn’t want anything to do with what we had to offer.  The pogey’s have moved into the shallow water off of our beaches, so this means if you can find the bait balls then you should be able to find the big fish.  This is supposed to be a good looking week out there on the water, so go get hooked up!

Whats Out There Right Now

The Wahoo bite has slowed down a little but they are definitely still chewing!  We went this past Tuesday and had seven hoo’s ranging from 30-50 pounds.  There were other boats around all day long and when we got in we heard the news that two of the boats landed 84 pound wahoo, so that was great for those guys.  The weeds seemed to have moved in close and were a pain to keep cleaning off all day, but that just means that the M will be hanging out underneath them very soon if they aren’t already.  Throughout the week we have been pulling some nice size Sheepshead off of the jetties which means the are moving in from offshore with the warm water.  If you don’t have access to a large enough boat to do what you want to do, check out the Jacksonville Boat Club and they can accommodate your pleasure boating or fishing needs.  Remember to swing by Strike-Zone for all of your tackle needs.

Bass Bite Is On Fire Down South

Posted by Gary Howell On March - 3 - 2014 ADD COMMENTS

This past weekend down in Welaka, Florida was an annual bass tournament we fish every year.  You can almost always count on this area producing some of the largest large mouth bass in all of Florida.  We pre ordered 20 dozen shiners to use for bait and went through nearly every one!  These bass were striking with a reason this weekend.  Of course we are always looking for that 15lb bass that is going to steal the show but sometimes you can’t find him or even get him to eat.  We were fishing 6 Abu Garcia Ambassedeurs on Shimano rods and between the 2 of us it as all we could do to tend to the strikes nd keep fresh bait on the lines. If the shiner didn’t get destroyed the minute it hit the water, it wasn’t long before it did.  Going into the last day a 12lb bass was leading and the best we had was an 8lb fish, unfortunately we fell short this tournament but not in the fun category.  Even if you aren’t a fisherman, Welaka is a great place to take the family for the weekend and relax and get away.
